When my kids are home I want to be able to spend as much quality time with them as possible rather than me trying to get things done while they watch TV! Since cooking is one of my life's greatest passions, I wanted to incorporate fun ways to create family memories during my weekly meal prep. One of which is by playing this fun, interactive, and engaging game.
It’s called “This or That” and the rules are as simple as its title!
This is a game you can play at anytime. It’s like “Would you Rather” but instead of scenarios you pick from your favorite things. It’s a fun way to learn more about your loved ones preferences as well as your own!
For example: flying or swimming? Mountains or forests? Island or jungle?
You keep it as generalized and abstract as possible having the kids answer impulsively and instinctually so as not to put too much thought into it. There are never “wrong” answers due to it being a preference game.
One of my favorite ways to use this game is taking out some spices or sauces (even food choices) that are flexible enough to be worked into your recipe. Then you play This or That with the ingredients you took out. You can separate the options in advance and then while prepping you ask, “savory or spicy?” Then selecting the option that represents the answer that was given.
This way you all remain engaged and invested throughout the cooking process and the kids are more likely to eat the food because they had say in the menu. It’s also a great way to show your children or even your spouse what goes into your prepping time!
It also helps to remember a choice can be within a moment. Like saying “oregano is my pick for right now -but tomorrow it might be garlic.”
Some ways I’ve used this game is with, flavoring choices, veggie options, even things like “rice or quinoa.” These are options that allow for it to be different enough for it to be a preference, all without disrupting the menu. You’ll be spending quality time with your children and may even insist on a few “turns” yourself to ensure everyone has a say in the meal for that night!
