SHARSHERET: A CONNECTION WE ALL NEED

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and it is my honor to work with Sharsheret, The Jewish Breast and Ovarian Cancer Community in an effort to raise awareness and put an end to these terrible diseases. While no one I know personally has ever had to battle these cancers, I do know so many of you have been touched by these diseases and as women, we are all certainly at risk. Because of my connection to you, teaming up with Sharsheret, which means ‘chain’ or ‘connection’ in Hebrew, seems so fitting… especially when 1 in 40 women and men of Ashkenazi Jewish descent carries a mutation of BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene. That’s 10x more likely than the general population.
This number is staggering considering that BRCA mutations trigger up to an 88% lifetime risk for breast cancer and up to a 45% lifetime risk for ovarian cancer. Founded in 2001, Sharsheret has worked to improve and save lives through psychosocial support and educational outreach, before during and after a diagnosis of breast or ovarian cancer.
Most of us are so busy with our lives, we often put self-care and our health at the bottom of our priority. But did you know that you reduce your risk just by taking small measures of prevention? Here are some important reminders:
  • Speak with your healthcare professional about your family history and personal risk
  • Know your body, so you can notice any changes that may arise over time
  • Learn about the signs and symptoms of breast and ovarian cancer
  • Understand your hereditary cancer risk by speaking to Sharsheret's genetic counselor on a free, confidential phone call by calling (866)474-2774 or visiting www.sharsheret.org
For those of you interested in learning more about Sharsheret and the work they do to save lives and raise awareness in the Jewish Communities about cancer, genetic predispositions and how to be proactive in your own life about your health, head to www.sharsheret.org
